Seven years ago, Chelsea Capener and her husband, Bryan, were exercising in their small town’s rather old gym and had an idea: what if they could open their own gym full of high-quality equipment, newer fitness offerings, safer amenities, and even a fitness center play area and daycare center, giving the families in their community an exciting and healthy new way to spend time together?
Shortly thereafter, Results Gym and Fitness was born in Tremonton, UT and it’s already expanded from its original 5,000 square feet to a brand new 16,000-square-foot facility. The gym includes group fitness classes, a training center similar to Cross Fit, free weights, a cardio center, and a indoor play area that doubles as a preschool.
“Our goal was to provide a family-friendly environment where a mom or dad can go and work out and feel comfortable and challenged,” says Chelsea. “We also wanted it to be a place where kids were excited to go, making it easier for parents to get their exercise.”
With the kids in mind, the Capener’s dedicated space in their new facility for a children’s area that includes three rooms separated by half walls. The rooms include a baby room, a preschool room and a fitness center play area, which was custom designed by Soft Play. The space looks wide-open when parents enter thanks to the half walls, but keeps kids separated by their abilities and interests.
“We created it in a way that makes the absolute most use of each space,” explains Chelsea. “It provides child care when parents are working out, we can rent it out for birthday parties, and it also serves as a preschool.”
Soft Play helped the Capeners create a fitness center play area that fit the space perfectly and also offered as much play potential as possible. The area boasts a forest theme and includes a waterfall slide in the corner, a bridge, and smaller pieces like a bunny and turtle.
“At the open house, the play area was one of those things that shocked people,” reports Chelsea. “We have to drive 50 miles out of town to find something like that. People were very excited.”
She says that they considered other play area options but selected the Soft Play pieces due to their easy maintenance and the fact that the coatings on the play elements shed bacteria, helping to stop the spread of germs.
“At our old location, we had tons of little toys. It was a headache to pick them up and to keep them clean.”
Another benefit of the super-fun playroom is that it’s helping to attract and retain members.
“As a mom, I want my kids to bug me to go to the gym,” says Chelsea. “In our town, there’s not much to do and kids were always bugging their moms to take them to the McDonald’s play area, but then you end up spending money on French fries. Now kids are bugging their parents to bring them here.”
So, seven years after the idea was born, the Capeners are living their dream-come-true.
“While we were getting this off the ground, my husband worked at a local company and I was a stay-at-home mom, building the business,” says Chelsea. “He continued to work while we built this but he recently quit his job and we run it together. We always hoped that we could work together, raise our kids together, attend their activities… now we can!”
